On Friday, September 28, 2018, Gordon gave two presentations to communication and admission professionals who are members of the Independent Schools Association of British Columbia (ISABC ):
Non-cognitive Assessment
Gordon discussed recent admission trends in which assessment has moved away from academic testing to focusing more closely on non-cognitive attributes, including EQ and CQ. Anchored in the work of people like Angela Duckworth, and her book Grit, and Robert J. Sternberg, and his book, College Admissions for the 21st Century, Gordon presented tangible examples of how progressive schools are incorporating this work and ensuring their admission practices align with the some of the pedagogical changes that are occurring in their own schools, including a greater emphasis on values and collaborative work and a de-emphasis on a "me, myself, and I" mentality.
Crisis Communication
Many schools have Crisis Plans but not a Crisis Communications Plan. Gordon shared his experience in helping to manage the communications of a crisis at a school which was a lead story on CNN. His talk focused on how schools can create comprehensive Crisis Communications Plans that respect their multiple stakeholders and reinforce the need to project an image of truthfulness, respect, and empathy.
